| A
blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure performed
for the purpose of tightening and removing
excess skin and fat from the upper and lower
eyelids. Patients requesting this surgery
are usually between the ages of 35 and 65,
men and women, and they do so because they
feel that their excessive eyelid skin causes
them to have a tired appearance and an older
demeanor. Although this procedure is performed
for aesthetic purposes in most instances,
the Medical Services Plan will accept responsibility
for this surgery in exceptional circumstances
where the upper eyelid skin is so excessive
that it interferes with vision. Blepharoplasty
surgery can be performed under either local
anaesthetic or general anaesthetic. A tarsoconjunctival
lower eyelid blepharoplasty can address wrinkling
in the lower eyelids. In our practice, upper
and lower eyelid blepharoplasty each take
30-45 minutes to perform. Patients can expect
to be swollen and bruised from 7-14 days following
surgery with the majority of the swelling
and bruising occurring within the first 48
hours. The results from this surgery are usually
noticeable within 1-2 weeks of surgery. |
